GI Diet :: Weight Control and Obesity

Recent animal research provides compelling evidence that high GI carbohydrate is associated with increased risk of obesity. In human trials it is typically difficult to separate the effect from GI and other potentially confounding factors such as fibre content, palatability and compliance.

GI Diet :: Glycaemic index or GI

The Glycemic Index (also glycaemic index, GI) is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose levels. It compares carbohydrates gram for gram in individual foods, providing a numerical, evidence-based index of postprandial (post-meal) glycemia. The concept was invented by Dr. David J. Jenkins and colleagues in 1981 at the University of Toronto.

Breastfeeding :: Fentanyl during labor impede breastfeeding

Women who receive fentanyl analgesia during labor may be less likely to breastfeed their infants, according to UK investigators. Based on their findings, they propose that women given this type of analgesia during labor should also receive support to successfully establish breastfeeding in the hospital.

HIV :: Confusion and Conflict when it comes to HIV and AIDS

In Canada, HIV was first diagnosed among gay men. Later, hemophiliacs and others with health problems were infected due to tainted blood received through blood transfusions. People infected early on had no treatment available! A new and strange virus was weakening the immune system and causing illness in various ways, (what we now know as opportunistic. infections). That?s all we knew! Those who were infected looked for ways to boost their immune system. Not everyone affected by the disease was dying. Unfortunately, the media wrote only about those who were being ravaged by the disease and dying.

Gallstone :: Trans fats raise gallstone risk

Trans fatty acids could ?modestly? increase the risk of gallstone disease, say US researchers, providing yet more evidence to encourage food makers to remove these fats from food formulations.

Skin Care :: Wider Use of New Laser Skin Treatments

Research reported today shows a previously experimental procedure, which combines a topical medication with laser skin treatment, will enable dermatologic surgeons to successfully reverse damage caused by excessive sun exposure, heal acne and other skin conditions, and remove some malignant and pre-cancerous skin tumors.
