Heart Disease :: Arm exercises enhance walking distance in PAD

Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can benefit from upper-body aerobic exercises, according to a study presented at Scientific Sessions by Diane Treat-Jacobson, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, Minneapolis. The findings of the study demonstrated significantly increased maximal walking distance and delayed onset of claudication after aerobic arm exercises.

HIV :: No link found between erectile medications and HIV

Erectile dysfunction (ED) medications known as Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors have been used by millions of men as safe and effective management options associated with high rates of patient and partner satisfaction.

Brain :: Speak, memory – Research challenges theory of memory storage

During sleep, freshly minted memories move from the hippocampus, part of the “old” brain, to the neocortex, or “new” brain, for long-term storage. This has been the reigning theory for decades. Brown University research provides the strongest proof yet of this interaction between the old and new brains — and offers surprising evidence that challenges critical details of this theory of learning and memory. Results appear in Nature Neuroscience.

Bones :: Nearly unbreakable

Max Planck Scientists discover a novel construction principle at the nanoscale which prevents bones from breaking at excessive force.

ACTOS (pioglitazone HCl) halted progression of atherosclerosis as indicated by CIMT

Researchers today presented data showing that ACTOS (pioglitazone HCl) halted the progression of atherosclerosis as measured by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Results from the clinical trial, CHICAGO (Carotid intima-media thickness in Atherosclerosis using pioglitazone), are part of a late-breaker presentation at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2006, coincidentally being held in Chicago, and coincide with an early online issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
