Pharmaceutical :: FDA orders retesting for MDS lab clients

US FDA urges drugmakers and pharmaceutical companies to check their clinical studies data for certain drugs done for them by a unit of MDS Inc. to make sure the results were accurate. Inspections of two MDS Pharma Services sites in Canada raised questions about the validity and accuracy of studies conducted from 2000 to 2004 to measure drug levels in a patient’s blood.

Medicare :: Projected Medicare Part D Costs Drop By 30 Percent

Independent estimates for the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit for the FY 2008 budget cycle show that net Medicare costs are 30 percent less — $189 billion lower — than were originally predicted when the benefit was created in 2003, HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced today. In addition, based on strong, competitive bids by health care plans for 2007, average monthly premiums will be approximately $22 for beneficiaries, down from $23 in 2006, if enrollees remain in their current plans. The initial estimate for 2006 premiums was $37.

Breast Cancer :: Tumor free breast tissue can have precancerous changes

A new study using mastectomy tissue shows that precancerous changes can occur in normal-appearing areas of the breast as distant as two inches from a tumor’s edge. The findings, while preliminary, might have important implications for identifying breast-cancer patients at high risk of a second tumor in the same breast.

Memory Loss :: Education does not protect against age-related memory loss

Adults over 70 with higher levels of education forgot words at a greater rate than those with less education, according to a new study from the University of Southern California. The findings, published in the current issue of Research on Aging, suggest that after age 70, educated adults may begin to lose the ability to use their schooling to compensate for normal, age-related memory loss.
