The types of food eaten in an effort to cut down on saturated fat may make a difference in reducing heart disease risk, according to a study of people with either high blood pressure or prehypertension. The study was supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a part of the National Institutes of Health.

In its ongoing commitment to improve the safety monitoring of implantable cardiac devices and provide earlier notice to doctors and patients of potential problems, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its retrospective review of malfunctions of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) and pacemakers occurring from 1990-2002. The findings were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society “Policy Conference on Pacemaker and ICD Performance,” in Washington, DC.

Insomnia :: Broader Use of Cognitive n Behavioral Therapies for Chronic Insomnia

Many of the medications widely used to manage chronic insomnia have not yet been rigorously evaluated for long-term use, according to an independent scientific panel convened this week by the National Institutes of Health. This is a critical consideration because for many patients, insomnia can persist for decades. The panel also stressed that many chronic insomnia sufferers could benefit from currently underused behavioral and cognitive therapies.

We Can! provides resources and community-based programs for parents, caregivers, and youth that focus on behaviors to encourage healthy eating, increase physical activity, and reduce sedentary time.
