GAIKER-IK4 Technological Centre’s Area of Biotechnology, together with the Opthtalmological Surgery Clinical Institute of Bilbao (ICQO) are co-operating in a research project the aim of which is to develop a diagnostic system, based on immunochromatographic techniques, for the specific recognition of proteic markers for ocular pathologies in eye teardrop samples.

According to the National Eye Institute, Americans are facing increasing rates of visual impairment from age-related diseases. The articles in this special issue on vision address three general areas: screening for diabetic retinopathy, basic research on treating and preventing vision loss, and management of patients with low vision.

Glaucoma :: Patients at Risk for Glaucoma Will Benefit From Risk Assessment Tool

A combined analysis of two landmark clinical glaucoma trials — the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) and the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS) — confirms the benefit of a five-year risk assessment model to help ophthalmologists better predict which patients have an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, affecting approximately 70 million people, and can lead to blindness if left untreated. These new data were presented this week at the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.
