Bird Flu :: Bird flu strikes Vietnam again, kills ducks

Bird flu has struck poultry in central Vietnam again. Bird flu has been found on a duck farm in central Vietnam.

Nearly 160 ducklings died at a private farm in the central province of Nghe.

Test results stated they were infected with the deadly H5N1 virus, and confirmed by Nguyen Xuan Yem, director of Nghe An’s animal health department. It said the 40-day-old ducklings had not been vaccinated against bird flu.

Authorities have slaughtered the remaining 400 ducks at the farm and disinfected the area. Control over movement and trading of poultry has been tightened.

Last month the World Health Organisation (WHO) urged Vietnam to accelerate poultry vaccinations and target more ducks in its anti-bird flu campaign.

The Animal Health Department said 60 of Vietnam’s 64 provinces have so far finished or nearly completed the first of a two-phase vaccination campaign which targets up to 90 percent of the country’s poultry stock.
