Ovarian Cancer :: Ovarian cancer may mimic fallopian tube formation

A new study suggests that ovarian cancer cells form by hijacking a developmental genetic process normally used to form fallopian tubes. Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Ovarian Cancer Institute discovered that the protein, PAX8, is involved in the development of fallopian tubes and is present in ovarian cancer cells, but not in normal ovarian tissue.

In a move that could dramatically increase the nation’s supply of stem cells for transplantation, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, recently awarded a $9 million grant to the cord blood bank at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Infertility :: Treating male infertility with stem cells

New research has examined the usefulness of bone marrow stem cells for treating male infertility, with promising results. The related report by Lue et al, “Fate of bone marrow stem cells transplanted into the testis: potential implication for men with testicular failure,” appears in the March issue of The American Journal of Pathology.

Stem Cell :: Failing hearts regenerated with programmed embryonic stem cells

Mayo Clinic researchers have safely transplanted cardiac preprogrammed embryonic stem cells into diseased hearts of mice successfully regenerating infarcted heart muscle without precipitating the growth of a cancerous tumor — which, so far, has impeded successful translation into practice of embryonic stem cell research.
