Student loan repayments to health professionals

NIH’s application cycle for Loan Repayment
Programs opens September 1, 2004, and closes December 15,
2004. The NIH awards up to $35,000 annually in student loan
repayments to health professionals engaged in qualifying
research.

Center for Quantitative Biology

To probe the complexities of living systems, the National
Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), part of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), has established its
fifth Center of Excellence in Complex Biomedical Systems
Research. The new center, headed by David Botstein, Ph.D.,
at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., will explore
how biological molecules interact with each other and their
environment to create dynamic systems.

Obesity :: Research strategy to fight Obesity

Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research”, a multi-dimensional research agenda to
enhance both the development of new research in areas of
greatest scientific opportunity and the coordination of
obesity research across NIH, released.

Dementia :: Caregivers and relative with dementia

A new study shows that caregivers of dementia patients who
must make the difficult decision to place their relatives
into institutionalized care get no relief from depression
and anxiety, and in fact suffer additional emotional trauma
following their decision.

New gene test for isolated cleft lip & palate

Researchers report they now can predict whether some
parents are more likely than others to have a second child
with the “isolated” form of cleft lip and palate, one of
the world’s most common birth defects, according to results
of a study published in the “New England Journal
of Medicine”.

Cancer :: Genes associated with cancer drug resistance

Scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, have created a database of information about a group of genes associated
with multidrug resistance in cancerous tumors. The research, published in the issue of “Cancer Cell”, details the gene expression of a 48-member family of proteins called ABC transporters. The NCI scientists identified associations between expression of individual ABC transporters in cancer cells and resistance to specific drugs.

Depo Provera contraceptive increases risk for chlamydia and gonorrhea infection

The injectable contraceptive depot-medroxyprogesterone
acetate (DMPA) appears to increase a woman’s risk of
acquiring the sexually transmitted infections chlamydia and
gonorrhea by approximately three fold when compared to
women not using a hormonal contraceptive, according to a
study jointly funded by the National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the National
Institutes of Health and the U.S. Agency for International
Development’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health.

Genes, Genome and Chromosomes

All living things are made up of basic units called cells, which are so tiny that you can only see them through the lens of a strong microscope. Most of the billions of cells in the human body have one nucleus that acts as a control center, housing our 46 chromosomes. A chromosome is a thread-like structure found in the cell’s nucleus, which can carry hundreds, sometimes thousands, of genes.

HIV :: HIV & AIDS – Naturopathic Physicians

HIV :: HIV & AIDS – Naturopathic Physicians

In many countries throughout the world, people are going to naturopathic physicians when faced with a health issue. Unfortunately, where I live in Vancouver, (British Columbia, Canada) the government is planning to cut back the scope of naturopathic medicine by imposing controls on what a naturopathic physician can and cannot do. The B.C. government does not allow naturopathic physicians to have access to medical labs and x-rays or to prescribe medications. The proposed changes include limiting the ability of naturopathic physicians to perform physical exams, diagnose and treat food allergies and place severe restrictions on the medicines ND’s use to treat patients. We must not lose the right of choice and the right to choose!

Obesity :: Theories on obesity – excess body weight

Obesity is a state in which there is generalised accumulation of excess adipose tissue in the body leading to more than 20%of the desirable weight. Obesity invites disabilty, disease and premature d eath. Excess body weight is a hindrance, leading to breathlessness on moderate exertion and predisposes a person to diseases like atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, gall bladder diseases and osteoarthiritis of weight bearing joint and varicose veins.
