Stem Cell :: NIH grant supports collaboration to develop stem cell science

Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., applying proprietary human embryonic stem (ES) cell technology to the emerging field of regenerative medicine, has been awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the amount of $204,439 in conjunction with a research project currently underway with one of its academic partners, The Burnham Institute of Medical Research (Burnham Institute).

Cancer :: Bristol scientists target cancer spread

Researchers at a medical research firm affiliated to the University of Bristol say that they have identified a new method of fighting the spread of cancer. The scientists looked at the natural life cycle of cells, one of the key biological processes linked to cancer growth. In particular they focused on a molecule known as protein kinase B (PKB) that is found in all cells.

Gene :: Key finding in rare muscle disease

A group of researchers has discovered a number of children suffering from rare muscle diseases whose bodies have “switched on” a gene that is usually turned off at birth.

Stroke :: Fewer patients undergoing stroke prevention surgery for wrong reasons

A new study has found a drop in the number of patients undergoing the most commonly used stroke prevention surgery, carotid endarterectomy, for inappropriate reasons. Researchers are crediting the drop to highly publicized randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that clarified the appropriate use of the surgery. The researchers’ findings are published in the January 16, 2007, issue of Neurology?, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Anthrax :: Anthrax attack posed greater potential threat than thought

A new study shows that more people were at risk of anthrax infection in the Oct_2001 attack on US Senator Tom Daschle’s office than previously known. The research is published in the January 15 issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, now available online. On the other hand, the study shows, prompt intervention with antibiotics and vaccination appeared to be highly effective against the disease.
