Diabetes :: Glucose levels trigger compensation for type 2 diabetics

Many individuals with type 2 diabetes are diabetic because the cells of their body no longer respond to the hormone insulin, which is crucial for lowering blood sugar levels (blood glucose levels). However, before individuals become clinically diabetic their body tries to compensate for the increasing resistance to the effects of insulin by increasing both the amount of insulin secreted and the mass of insulin-secreting cells (beta cells) in the pancreas.

Liver :: Liver X Receptor’s role in glucose metabolism and fat synthesis

In a new study, scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have described for the first time a glucose-activated sensor that acts as a switch to decrease production of endogenous glucose in the liver, and increase conversion of glucose to fat for storage in adipose tissue. This dual action makes the sensor, Liver X Receptor, a potential target for new therapies aimed at obesity and diabetes. The research may also have implications for heart disease and stroke.

Diabetes :: Safety warning about blood glucose meters

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has identified a safety problem with certain blood glucose meters which under certain conditions display the wrong units of measurement. This could result in an insulin overdose and hypoglycaemic coma.

Diabetes :: Less sugary drinks during childhood may cut disease risk

Symptoms of heart disease and diabetes usually seen in adults are increasingly being found in adolescents according to a longitudinal study, which suggests that reducing the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages during childhood may lessen the risk of chronic disease in later life.

Diabetes :: Alert on Counterfeit One Touch Blood Glucose Test Strips

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is providing an update to its notifications on October 13, and October 23, 2006, alerting the public to counterfeit blood glucose test strips being sold in the US for use with various models of LifeScan, Inc., One Touch Brand Blood Glucose Monitors. These test strips are used by people with diabetes to measure their blood glucose. Today?s update includes an additional lot number that is being distributed, along with a description of how to identify the new lot.

Hepatitis :: Cases of hepatitis B associated with lancing devices

Since 2004, seven cases of hepatitis B have been reported to the Health Protection Agency from care and residential homes following the incorrect use of lancing devices. On further investigation by local Health Protections Units eleven more cases have been identified in diabetics who have probably been infected by these means.
