Baby Care :: Less help at home — Female support for new Moms on the decline

How is motherhood different than it was a century ago? In the past, live-in grandmothers, relatives and other women were frequently available to assist with childcare. But times have changed. New research by Brown University sociologist Susan E. Short shows that today’s mothers with young children are getting substantially less help around the house. Even when other women are living in the household, they aren’t necessarily on hand to help with the kids. This research appears in Demography.

Interim data from a clinical trial using Aldagen’s product, ALDESORT? to isolate stem cells from cord blood was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology demonstrating improved safety and efficacy when using ALDESORT compared to the COBLT control group. The trial is being conducted by Joanne Kurtzberg, MD, the Duke University physician who pioneered the use of umbilical cord blood as treatment for fatal childhood cancers and genetic diseases.

Breastfeeding :: New study shows epidural during birth may negatively affect breastfeeding

Epidurals given during labour and birth are associated with decreased rates of breastfeeding, both in the short and long term. A large study of Australian women, published today in the open access journal International Breastfeeding Journal, found that women who had epidurals during childbirth were more likely to have breastfeeding problems in the first week and to give up breastfeeding before six months, compared with women who had no analgesia.

Disability :: Disability among older Americans continues significant decline

Chronic disability among older Americans has dropped dramatically, and the rate of decline has accelerated during the past two decades, according to a new analysis of data from the National Long-Term Care Survey (NLTCS). The study, published in this week?s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the prevalence of chronic disability among people 65 and older fell from 26.5 percent in 1982 to 19 percent in 2004/2005.
