Meningitis :: Meningitis shot and risk for Guillain Barre syndrome

Young people who get a new meningitis shot may be at a slightly higher risk of developing a paralyzing side effect, federal researchers said. Even so, U.S. health officials said the benefits far outweigh the risk of getting the rare condition, Guillain Barre syndrome. They are not backing off their recommendation that most students be vaccinated.

Influenza :: Tamiflu for Prevention of Influenza in Children

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) for prevention (prophylaxis) of seasonal influenza (“flu”) in children 1 to 12 years of age who had close contact with an infected individual. This is the first drug approved for prevention of both influenza A and B in pediatric patients.

Whooping Cough :: New Vaccine to Protect against Whooping Cough

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new vaccine for a single booster immunization against pertussis (whooping cough), in combination with tetanus and diphtheria, for adolescents and adults 11-64 years of age. The vaccine will be marketed as Adacel by Aventis Pasteur Limited located in Toronto, Canada. Adacel is the first vaccine approved as a pertussis booster for adults. Vaccines for prevention of tetanus and diphtheria (Td vaccine) in adolescents and adults have been available for many years.

Health :: Continuum of care – approach for mother and child

Hundreds of millions of women and children have no access to potentially life-saving care with often fatal results, the World Health Organization (WHO) says in a report published. The report says the resulting death toll could be sharply reduced through wider use of key interventions and a “continuum of care” approach for mother and child that begins before pregnancy and extends through childbirth and into the baby’s childhood.
