Blackwell Publishing is set to break into an exciting new area of clinical psychiatry with its new journal – Early Intervention in Psychiatry. The journal will be launched at the IEPA Conference in Birmingham in October 2006, and will publish its inaugural issue in February 2007.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a report that could help American industry and consumers take important steps to successfully combat the nation’s obesity problem. The report is titled, the “Keystone Forum on Away-From-Home Foods: Opportunities for Preventing Weight Gain and Obesity.” It provides recommendations from experts in industry, government, civic sector organizations, and academia, for improving consumers’ ability to manage calorie intake from foods prepared and purchased away-from-home. The Keystone Report offers recommendations related to: 1) understanding and influencing consumer behavior; 2) increasing the availability of lower-calorie products, menu items, and meals; and 3) providing consumers with nutrition information.

The Fourth World Health Organization (WHO) Global Forum on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control opened in Ottawa, Canada. The Forum brings together senior level country officials, international agencies and non-Governmental organizations, as well as chronic disease and public health experts from around the world to focus on the growing global burden of chronic diseases. Of the estimated 57 million global deaths last year, 33 million were attributed to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.
