Medical Negligence :: Towel left in woman’s abdomen during caeserean section, India

In a case of alleged medical negligence, an Indian surgeon left a towel in the abdomen during caeserean operation performed on a woman who later died at her house in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, official sources said.

28-year-old Phool Devi, wife of Shiv Shankar Mandal of Baheri, was admitted to a private nursing home run by surgeon Chandreshwar Choudhary for child birth on July eight.

Choudhary, posted at a primary health centre at Baheri, performed a caeserean section on her at his nursing home where she delivered a baby but a towel was allegedly left in her abdomen.

The doctor discharged her after removing the stiches, the sources said.

A few days later Phool Devi, writhing in pain, was admitted to another private nursing home of a doctor named Rajiv Nayan who opened her abdomen once again on July 23 and removed the towel.

Her condition began detriorating a few days after she discharged following the second operation and she died in her house yesterday, the sources said.

Her body was taken to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

The state government suspended Choudhary and ordered the district authorities to register an FIR against him at Baheri police station. The surgeon is, however, evading arrest, the sources said.
