Infant :: Canadian consumers cautioned to inspect powdered infant formula cans

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Abbott Nutrition are advising consumers across Canada to check 900-gram Similac Advance Step 2 powdered infant formula cans for the presence of a false, over-stickered lot number and expiration date.

The affected product is known to have been supplied by an unauthorized distributor to a liquidation outlet in Ontario and may have been sold at other liquidation outlets across Canada. The unauthorized distributor of this product may also have sold it through other retail accounts in Canada.

On May 3, 2007, a consumer advisory was issued by CFIA and Abbott Nutrition to advise the public of the unauthorized sale of the product. At that time, the affected product had been found only in a limited number of retailers and pharmacies in the Montr?al area.

Abbott applies the expiration date and lot number information directly onto the bottom of its cans in ink ? and does not use stickers for this purpose.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the product involved in this action. Correctly labeled Similac Advance Step 2 has not been affected ? nor has any other Abbott Nutrition product.

Abbott is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and law enforcement authorities, as well as its retail and pharmacy customers, to identify the over-stickered product and remove it from the market.

Consumers using Similac Advance Step 2 powdered infant formula should inspect the bottom of the cans to see if they have been over-stickered
