Eggs from tainted-eggs supplier sold in HK

The Centre for Food Safety has confirmed a local department store had sold duck eggs from the Hubei Shendan Healthy Food Company during a food fair.

However, these duck eggs were not from the same batch found to contain Sudan dyes in the Mainland.

Noting the company did not export duck eggs to Hong Kong, the centre said about 2,250 duck eggs the company produced were available for sale during a food fair organised by the Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium in mid-October. About 1,000 eggs had been sold and the rest were surrendered to the centre.

The centre has taken samples from the eggs concerned for testing. Results will be available tomorrow.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine also informed the centre that eight batches of duck eggs from seven enterprises were found to contain Sudan dyes.

Duck eggs from the seven enterprises have not been exported to Hong Kong. The centre will step up inspection to see if the duck eggs in question are sold in the local market.
