Down Syndrome :: Conference focuses on Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities

Families and professionals eager to learn more about how individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities can overcome obstacles and enjoy healthy, productive futures can register for the Andrew J. Kirch Annual Conference, to be held 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at the Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford.

From a lifespan perspective, an interdisciplinary group of experts and health care providers will offer insight on topics such as:

navigating transitions in both health care (from pediatric care to adult care) and education (exploring post-secondary options)
building independence for students with intellectual disabilities
accessing mental health care services across one’s lifetime
balancing nutrition and managing weight for young people with Down syndrome
seeking employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities

Special keynote speaker William I. Cohen, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and director of the Down Syndrome Center of Western Pennsylvania and professor of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will focus on health issues of priority in young (and older) adults with Down syndrome.

The conference is sponsored by the Kirch Center program at the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong and the Flower City Down Syndrome Network.
