Cold wave conditions continue to sweep North India

Piercing cold wave conditions continued to sweep North India as temperature plummeted at several places in the region. In Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, has been opened for one-way traffic.

In Himachal Pradesh, mercury fell sharply in tribal areas. Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti witnessed the coldest night of the season at minus 12.4 degrees Celsius. In Punjab and Haryana, a thick blanket of fog threw normal life out of gear at many places in the region.

In Rajasthan, one person was found dead in Jaipur taking the death toll to three due to cold this season in the state. Authorities in Jaipur District have extended the winter holidays in all government and private schools till January 11.
