Botulism :: 75 brands of Castleberry’s Chili Sauce, Stew, Canned Meat may contain Clostridium botulinum

Castleberry’s Food Company, a Georgia establishment owned by Bumble Bee Foods, LLC, is voluntarily expanding its July_19 recall of canned meat products that may contain Clostridium botulinum, Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. announced.

?This recall is being expanded because it appears that processing malfunctions at the company existed longer than first estimated,? Farrell said. ?For that reason, Castelberry?s is recalling all of the following products that may still be in commerce, regardless of the ?best buy? date stamped on the bottom of the can.

?Furthermore, it appears that some products have definitely been sold in Connecticut,? Farrell said. ?At this time, we know that Big Y sold Castleberry products under the Big Y brand name, and is now removing them from sale. We will continue to pursue information about other products in Connecticut and will work with the stores to be sure they are removed from sale. However, it?s very important that consumers refrain from buying any of the products listed below for now, and return or discard any that may already be at home.?

The canned meat products were distributed nationwide. The problem was discovered during an investigation into illnesses in Indiana and Texas. The investigation led to a recall by FDA of three types of meatless hotdog chili sauce.

Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin. Symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness, and can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Two children in Texas and an Indiana couple who ate these products became seriously ill and have been hospitalized.

Consumers who have these items at home are urged to return the item to the store where the product was bought for a full refund. Anyone who finds any of these items in Connecticut stores are encouraged to notify the Department of Consumer Protection at (860) 713-6160.
