Arthritis :: Exercising could reduce arthritis disability

Exercise may cut the risk of disability from arthritis, a study says. Arthritis is a condition affecting the health of bone joints in the body. People with arthritis are often reluctant to exercise as they fear it will make their condition worse.

Researchers at Northwestern University, Chicago, who studied more than 3,500 people in their 50s and 60s with arthritis found, that those who exercised at least 30 minutes a day, five days per week – were least likely to become more disabled.

The study by Joe Feinglass and fellow researchers, which recently appeared in Arthritis and Rheumatism journal, also said that active people who did not quite meet the recommended exercise goal benefited nearly as much.

One in three adult Americans suffer from some form of arthritis and the disease affects about twice as many women as men.
