Alcohol :: Most Britons turn to alcohol when stressed

The number of people who drink alcohol when they feel stressed has risen in the last three years, research has revealed.

The report by the charity group the Samaritans says as many as five million people in the country are completely stressed out and a third of the work force is so stressed out by their job that their sleep is affected and many resort to drink as a means of relaxing.

UK is one of the most stressed nations in all of Europe. Money, family pressures, and long hours at work are all being blamed as contributing factors, to why half of the British population say that they feel more stress than they did 5 years ago.

According to the Samaritans internet survey, most stress was found to be in young people with 70% of participants between the ages of 16 and 24 reporting that they felt more stress than they did 5 years previous. Forty-five per cent of men and 32 per cent of women told the Samaritans work is their biggest cause of stress. And 56 per cent of people say their sleep is disturbed when they are stressed.

Britons are urged to take more effective measures to combat stress as this new survey was published showing stress levels are on the rise.
